Miracle at St. Anna (2008)

So I finally got to see Miracle at St. Anna, the recent release by Spike Lee.  I read the previous reviews and put this one on the old “back burner.”  I’m not sure why I bought into that negative review hype, but I did.

The movie, while not great, is pretty darn good.  Lee knows how to make a film, and 24 full hours after finishing it, I’m still thinking about it.  That says something. The scenes that deal specifically with racism should be watched by students.  Many have heard these stories from participants, yet to see them is another matter altogether.

Visually, the movie is stunning.  The actors were flat out great.  There were a few events near the end that surprised and disappointed me all at the same time (you know this is the case when a filmmaker succeeds in building character).  I knew things were going to happen…but I didn’t want them to.

Bottom line: See Miracle at St. Anna.
